Michael Storm

Michael (Mike) Paul Storm passed away in the early morning hours of October 21, 2022, at the age of 68 surrounded by family after a bravely fought two-year battle with cancer.  Services will be held at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, October 29, 2022, at the United Methodist Church in Benton City, Washington.

Mike was born in San Pedro, California on May 13, 1954.  He is the oldest of five siblings raised in Redondo Beach, California where he was an avid swimmer and a letterman on the water polo team.

Mike obtained his Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from California State University, Long Beach, graduating in 1978.  Mike moved to eastern Washington in 1979 to begin working at the Hanford Nuclear Reservation.  It was there he met his wife Kathryn Gray, to whom he was married for 37 years.

Mike and Katy moved to Benton City, Washington, where they were actively involved in Boy Scout Troop #239. Mike enjoyed working on his home and property, spending time outdoors at various campgrounds, and raising his three boys.  Each of his boys followed his footsteps in obtaining the rank of Eagle Scout, the highest rank in scouting.  Mike obtained his Professional Engineering license, which he used in his profession at the Hanford Nuclear Site, where he was employed for 43 years. He was a member of IEEE society.

Mike was preceded in death by his parents, Bob and Anna Mae Storm, and Katy’s parents, Dan and Jean Gray.  Mike is survived by his wife, Katy Storm, and his children:  Michael Gray (Jocelyne), Sean Storm (Danielle), and Matthew Storm (Amanda), as well as his honorary son Jordan Smith (Kayli). He is also survived by his siblings: Gene, Noel, Pam, and Greg.  He leaves behind four grandchildren: Andrew, James, Jaxson, and a baby expected in May of 2023.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the charity of your choice may be made to honor Mike.

  • I was blessed with the chance to work with Mike for five years. He was a very talented engineer with deep insight into technical challenges with a knack for elegant solutions. Mike was a natural teacher and I learned a lot from him.
He was a truly caring man.
Mike was a very hard worker who didn’t hesitate to take time to celebrate successes and commiserate with a friend’s sorrows in life and work. I miss those long talks.
