Lloyd Leroy Ames, Jr.
Lloyd L Ames passed away on March 17 th , 2023.
Lloyd was born to Lloyd L Sr and Gladys in Norwich, Connecticut in 1927, eldest of three brothers and a
sister. He enlisted in the USMC at the tail end of World War 2 and served in the Philippines, then
attended USNA Officers training at Annapolis. He left to pursue college and graduated with a PhD in
Mineralogy from the University of Utah. During college, he met his bride and love of his life, Joan
(Romstad). After he completed his post doctorate, they moved together from Albuquerque to Richland
where Lloyd began a long, successful career at Hanford with DOE and Battelle. Lloyd and Joan raised one
son and three daughters in Richland. Life always included at least one dog plus assorted cats, rabbits,
finches, lizards, ponies, horses and even a hawk. Eventually, Lloyd and Joan moved to West Richland,
where they happily stayed the rest of their lives. Lloyd loved to learn and was very creative, always
becoming interested and accomplished at something new. His hobbies included being a talented
woodcarver, grape grower and winemaker, horse owner, and carpenter. His greatest pleasure
throughout his life, however, was growing and tending his own gardens. He was able to grow nearly any
fruit, vegetable, flower or nut in abundance. Lloyd and Joan enjoyed sharing the bounty with neighbors
and friends. His dear wife of 69 years, Joan, passed away two days after him. Lloyd is survived by his
brother Richard, his son Marc (Kay), his daughters; Sue, Jan, and Vanna (Dean), five grandchildren, and
one great grandchild.
My condolences
