Don served as the Director of Special Education for the Richland School District for over 30 years. He was responsible for Special Olympics coming to the Tri-Cities and he volunteered his time to help them for many years.

Don’s passion was his love for children of all ages. His greatest pleasure was being a Sunday School teacher at Hillspring Church for many years. he looked forward to Sundays just to be with his class.

He dearly loved and cherished his grandchildren and they loved him so much. He attended all school events, volunteered his time at their schools, attended their graduations and was so proud of each one of them.

Fishing was his hobby and Don spent many hours on the river with his sons, Donny and Kenny, nephew Kevin, friends Rich, Dale, and Gary. He taught granddaughters LisaLyn and Brianna ho to fish each summer during our yearly motorhome trips with them.

Sergeant Don Ray was a proud marine who served from 1955 – 1958.

  • We knew Don for 43 years. My husband, Ralph worked under him as a school psychologist, pre school coordinator. We got to know Don & Bernie and they became part of our family. Don & Ralph shared many adventures, laughs and experiences. He loved children, the outdoors and family functions.
We will miss this talented, caring man. Never forgotten, many lessons, many places, people’s lives impacted and he left his legacy everywhere he went!

  • Thank you to the Ray family for supporting Don Ray in his service to the Special Education community. Don Ray enriched our son John’s life. John graduated from Hanford High School in 1995 after spending all his school years in the Richland schools. Don opened doors for John to participate in a program that had not been done before. He took an interest in the students. He was director of special Education when he attended John’s Eagle Scout Court of Honor. John always knew he cared. about him.

May you be comforted and Blessed with peace. Mikal and Janet McKinnon
