Sargeant Grant Bumgarner Jr., fondly known as “Skip,” peacefully passed away on July 2nd, 2023, in Tacoma, Washington, at the remarkable age of 99. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Helen L. Bumgarner (Osborne), and five cherished children, Janet, Terry, Charlotte, Steven, and Karen. Grant is survived by his loving daughters Kris and Mary Beth, as well as his devoted siblings, brother Kirby Bumgarner and sister Charlcie Leek.

Born on June 9th, 1924, in Lubbock, Texas, to the proud parents Christeen and Grant Bumgarner Sr., Grant’s life was marked by service and dedication. He served actively in the Navy Reserve from 1942 to 1945, and subsequently enlisted in the army in 1950, retiring with the distinguished rank of Sergeant First Class in the spring of 1973.

Grant’s interests were as diverse as his experiences. He found joy in reading, crafting poetry, the culinary arts, storytelling, and the world of theater. His passion for acting led him to participate in notable productions such as “South Pacific,” “Of Mice and Men,” and “The Grapes of Wrath.” Above all, Grant cherished moments spent surrounded by his adoring family, including numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

In addition to his theatrical pursuits, Grant was an esteemed member of the Free Masons, reaching the distinguished level of 38. His commitment to this ancient and honorable fraternity was a testament to his character and values.

  • I had hoped to be able to attend, but will not be able, as my wife is recovering from a heart attack. I pray for God’s comfort for the family and friends.
