Mavis Humphreys

After more than 66 years of marriage, Mavis and Larry Humphreys went to be with their Lord and Savior within a few weeks of each other. Mavis passed away December 20th surrounded by family.

Mavis was born in 1936 near Arlburg, Arkansas to Seburn and Crystal (Watts) Simmons. Mavis and Larry were introduced by mutual friends in the Portland area and were married in 1957. Their first children, twin boys, were born while Larry was still in graduate school. Mavis and Larry had five children, Rick (Nancy), Mike (Kathryn), Denise, Mark (Francine) and John (Chelsea). They had 11 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Mavis was preceded in death by her parents; cherished son Mike; and beloved granddaughter Sophia. She is also survived by her sister Earlene Gallowa and much loved nieces and nephews.

Mavis was a devoted mother and wife for almost 67 years. She worked tirelessly raising five children and caring for her husband. Mavis loved her family and led by example with strong values and work ethic.  She was an excellent cook, the heart of the family, and the source of many family traditions.

Mavis became a Christian at an early age and lived a life of enduring faith. She and Larry were long-time active members of Richland Baptist Church which had a large impact on their lives and where they developed many treasured friendships. Mavis was very involved in the women’s ministry and was known for her generous hospitality.

There will be a memorial service at Richland Baptist Church to celebrate both Larry and Mavis on Saturday February 10th at 3:00 pm.
