After more than 66 years of marriage, Mavis and Larry Humphreys went to be with their Lord and Savior within a few weeks of each other. Larry passed away January 12th, following a day spent with family and friends.
Larry was born in Vancouver, Washington, to Norman and Elva (Guffnett) Humphreys in 1936. Mavis and Larry were introduced by mutual friends in the Portland area and were married in 1957. Their first children, twin boys, were born while Larry was still in graduate school. Mavis and Larry had five children, Rick (Nancy), Mike (Kathryn), Denise, Mark (Francine) and John (Chelsea). They had 11 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Larry was preceded in death by his parents; sister Betty Howard; cherished son Mike; and beloved granddaughter Sophia. He is also survived by his sister-in-law Earlene Gallowa and much loved nieces and nephews.
Larry went to school at Linfield college and got his master’s degree in chemistry at Oregon State University in Corvallis, Oregon. Larry had a long career in the nuclear industry working for Hanford contractors, Energy Northwest, and Gulf States Utilities. He retired as President of United Nuclear Corporation (UNC), a Hanford contractor, in 1987.
Larry loved baseball, motorcycles and golf as a young man and was an involved father. He regularly took his kids to the pool or the river, sometimes along with half the neighborhood kids. He loved to take his boys out golfing. As he got older, Larry had a way of blending wisdom with humor to make his message or encouragement more memorable and more impactful.
Larry was introduced to Christ through Mavis and was baptized in Richland Baptist Church as a young man in 1970. They were both long-time active members of Richland Baptist Church which had a large impact on their lives and where they developed many treasured friendships. Larry was very involved in the men’s ministry, he loved to teach from the Bible and led a men’s group for many years.
There will be a memorial service at Richland Baptist Church to celebrate both Larry and Mavis on Saturday February 10th at 3:00 pm.
Rick and Mike (in memoriam), so very sorry for your losses.
