Donald Jacobsen

Donald R. “Jake” Jacobsen passed away peacefully on February 6th, 2024 in Richland, Washington at 85 years old. He is forever remembered for being an outstanding husband, father, and grandfather as well as loved dearly by his friends and family.

Jake was born and raised in Pasco, Washington on December 5th, 1938, to his mother, Evelyn Armbruster, and his father, Jacob Jacobsen. Jake was raised alongside his sister Joyce, on their family farm. Growing up, Jake was involved in Future Farmers of America and served as a judge of hogs at the Benton Franklin County Fair.  After high school graduation, Jake enlisted into the United States Navy and sent through Electrician’s A school as well as the Nuclear Power school in Vallejo, California and Idaho Falls, Idaho. Ultimately coming back home to the Tri Cities area, Jake resided here for a total of 67 years; returning after the Navy to the Tri-Cities area and working at Hanford Nuclear Reservation.

Jake served in the United States Navy for 25 years where he served on two aircraft carriers, one high speed transport ship, and several submarines: The USS Skipjack, The USS Tautog, and The USS William H. Bates. During his time in the Navy, Jake was awarded the Navy Achievement Medal, Five Good Conduct Awards and attained the rank of E9 Master Chief Electrician before finishing his military career in September of 1980. Yet, despite his long list of achievements, Jake’s proudest moments were the births of his three children: Donald Jr., Dan and Dianne.

Jake is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Adrienne Jacobsen, his three children: Don Jr. (Connie) Jacobsen, Dan (Ginny) Jacobsen, Dianne (Gavin) Gillespie, his eight grandchildren: Brien, Natalie, Shea, Andrew, Joshua, Sasha, Noah and Reese, as well as two great-grandchildren: Scarlett and Ruth, and a new addition of a third great grandchild expected this August. He is preceded in death by his parents: Evelyn and Jacob, as well as his dear sister, Joyce Crust.

A memorial will be held on May 25th, 2024 at All Saints Episcopal Church in Richland, WA.

  • Adrienne,
My deepest condolences on the passing of Jake. I have such great memories of working with him and of course, the both of you coming to our Super Bowl parties. As a fellow bubblehead, we have deep ties that cannot be explained to many civilians. I know you understand as many of your closest friends served with Jake in submarines. He was a great man and a great friend. Have peace knowing he is resting in heaven.

“There is a port of no return, where ships
May ride at anchor for a little space
And then, some starless night, the cable slips,
Leaving an eddy at the mooring place.
Gulls, veer no longer. Sailor, rest your oar.
No tangled wreckage will be washed ashore.”
