Shirley Mae Szendre Strand of Richland Washington passed into the arms of her Lord and Savior, March 6, 2024, at the age of 97.

Shirley was born to Inez and Floyd Boyer on February 1, 1927 in West Allis, Wisconsin. With her two sisters, Mildred and Doris, the family moved to Munster, Indiana, where she later married the late Sam Szendre on January 18, 1947. Sam and Shirley lived near relatives until 1963 when they relocated with their 4 children to Richland, Washington. Shirley worked in retail and foodservice positions over the next several years until the grandchildren started showing up in 1970. Sam passed away suddenly in 1998. In 2003 Shirley married the late Clarence Strand, who preceded her in death in 2018.

Shirley is survived by 4 children, Sandi Gross (Larry), Sue Sams (Chuck), Sam Szendre (Laurie), Steve Szendre (Terri), and 9 Grandchildren – Jennifer Sams, Larry Gross, Jr., Rebecca Sams, James Gross, Angela Szendre, Scott Szendre, Mike Szendre, Mathew Szendre, and Keith Szendre; 20 Great-Grandchildren; and 9 Great-Great Grandchildren.

Shirley loved to camp with the family, vacation in Hawaii, and travel in their motorhome, visiting family & friends along the way. She also loved to prepare the family’s favorite pot roast for Sunday dinner and enjoyed watching the Seahawks or Mariners games. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Richland since 1965.

Shirley was immensely proud of her family and leaves behind beautiful memories. As her health declined, she continued journalling and praying for her many family and friends. She will be greatly missed.

A Graveside Service will take place on Saturday, March 16th, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. at Sunset Memorial Gardens, Richland, Washington, and a Celebration of Life will follow at the First Baptist Church of Richland.
