Celebration of Life
Johnny “John” Mack Fleming
Johnny Mack Fleming, 81, of West Richland, has passed away after a long struggle with a myelodysplastic syndrome. Johnny was preceded in death by his father, James George Fleming, Jr.; his mother, Nelrose Ellen Fleming; his son-in-law, Keith “Red” Alan Ragan and his wife, Martha Sue Fleming.
Johnny was born in Los Angeles, California and his family moved to St. Joseph, Missouri shortly afterwards. He graduated from Savannah High School, attended St. Joseph Junior College and graduated from Northwest Missouri State College. During this time, he also enlisted in the Air National Guard, serving honorably and with integrity until retiring, after over two decades, as a Lieutenant Colonel. Also at this time, he met the former Martha Sue Hartigan of St. Joseph, where they married and began a family as he started a long and successful career working in commercial/government related procurement, eventually earning an MBA and gaining national recognition as an expert in the field before retiring.
Johnny was a life-long learner and student of history, staying active with interests ranging from economics to geology, astronomy and the world religions – he was also heavily involved in participating in and teaching a local Tai Chi class that met regularly and rarely missed a Bloomsday race in Spokane, Washington in 30 years. Above it all, though, he was a man who deeply loved his family, friends and his country – he strived to do good every day with compassion and understanding, helping those who needed it whenever he could. He is survived by his daughter Amy; his sons Jason (Patty) and James (Rochelle); grandsons Timothy and Brenin; granddaughters Jane, Laura, Jamie, Jessica and their families.
A viewing with military honors will be held 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM on April 25th, 2024 at Einan’s Funeral Home.
I will always have a special place in my heart for John. I am forever grateful to Amy for sharing her parents with me.
I’ve tried and tried to find the right words to say goodbye. They just won’t come. So I’m gonna just wing it dad, here goes…I thank you for the time we got to spend together and the friendship you offered. It was a privilege to know you and there will never be another like you. I remember the times that Amy and I sat and told you you stories about our antics and had you laughing so hard, you were crying. Those were fun times. Namaste Dad. Journey on.
You will be missed Johnny! Thank you for being a friend. Rest in peace, dear man!
