Celebration of Life
Leonard Duane Gustafson
.
It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Leonard Duane “Gus” Gustafson, who left us peacefully on April 11, 2024, at the age of 95, in Richland, Washington. Born to Carl Albin and Pauline Nicholson Gustafson in Havre, Montana, Gus was a strength to his family and community.
Surviving Gus is his devoted wife of 68 years, Norma, his brother Willard, sister-in-law Ophilia, his son Todd, his daughter Lori and son-in-law David Saueressig, along with his grandchildren Morgan, Jessica, Ashtyn, and Dylan. Gus was preceded in death by his parents, his sisters Irma Wipperman, Helan, and Rowena Gustafson and grandson Alexander Pappas.
Gus was a man who embraced life with curiosity and enthusiasm. He enjoyed the opportunity to be outdoors. Some of the things he enjoyed were fishing, hunting, snow and water skiing. He was one of the founders of the original Desert Ski Club. He also enjoyed flying, often taking his family on memorable vacations by plane. Gus’s zest for adventure extended to his hobbies, which included riding motorcycles and traversing the country in an RV, with a particularly notable trip to Alaska.
An alumni of Montana State University, Gus achieved a Bachelor’s and a Master’s degree in Chemical Engineering. He went on to serve an esteemed 40-year career at the Hanford Site, where he excelled as a Nuclear Quality Assurance engineer and in various other engineering capacities that utilized his expertise.
His civic contributions were many, including his dedicated volunteer work with SIGN Fracture Care International and the Richland Kawanis Club. Gus’s commitment to these organizations was evidenced by his active participation in their fundraising events and his generous offering of his time.
Those wishing to honor Gus’s memory are invited to make contributions to SIGN Fracture Care International, an organization Gus held in high regard.
Future service to be held.
Sincere condolences to Len’s family … I remember him from the good old days at the Fast Flux Test Facility (Westinghouse). Len was very knowledgeable, an excellent leader, and I remember his great sense of humor. May your memories of times spent together, and the love of family and friends comfort you at this time.
