Sven Claire Leland

Sven Claire Leland, age 31, of Mattawa, WA, passed away on Monday, April 29, 2024 after a courageous battle with brain cancer. He leaves behind a trusty dog named Mr. Milo, and a collection of hobby equipment. A lifelong Mattawa resident, Sven graduated from Wahluke School District in 2011 and earned his associate degree from Big Bend Community College in 2014. He held various jobs in the area, including most recently working on the family farm. He filled his spare time with hobbies that often involved flames or sawdust including gardening, wood working, brewing, and metal forging. In 2020 after frequent headaches and an ambulance trip to the hospital, Sven was diagnosed with brain cancer. He faced this challenge with a brave face, stubbornly managing to make the best of it for a few more years before the cancer made an aggressive comeback in 2023. While Sven’s physical presence has set off on a new journey, his humor, ingenious DIY solutions, and genuine warmth remains with us. The endless stories, impromptu projects, and his commitment to his friends and family will continue to inspire and entertain.

Sven is survived by his devoted father Glenn Leland, his brothers Martin Leland and Lars Leland, sister-in-law Angela Leland, and his three nieces Vayda Leland, Tova Leland, Eleanor Larkin, and one nephew Dawson Leland. He was preceded in passing by his mother Meri Popejoy, and brother Justin Larkin. Sven’s memory will live on in the hearts with those that knew him.

A celebration of Sven’s life will be held at Grace Lutheran Church in Mattawa, WA, on 5/11/2024. Please come and bring a story about Sven that makes you smile and small foods for our potluck.
