Michael L. Schwartz

Michael Schwartz, 82, passed away at home on June 7, 2024, in Richland, WA, with his wife, Evelyn at his side. He battled cancer courageously for more than three years.

Michael Schwartz was born on October 20, 1941, in Cleveland, OH, to Hyman and Eileen Schwartz.

Michael graduated from high school in 1960 and went to Kent State University until early 1963 when he left school to join the US. Navy in February. Michael served in the Navy during the Vietnam War from 1963 until 1967. He attended Boot Camp in San Diego and Ratings School at the Great Lakes Training Center. Mike was posted to the USS Yorktown aircraft carrier in 1965 as an Internal Communications Specialist. He left the navy in 1967 and immediately started his career with Xerox, working as a service technician and regional manager, retiring in 2000.

Michael married Evelyn Schwartz after meeting on a successful blind date playing miniature golf in April 1967 in Pasadena, California. The couple had two children, Dan and Richard.

Michael was best known for his love of family and his many friends. He and Evelyn loved to explore the United States. An important part of their later years was their Thunderbird roadster and their many cross-country adventures as members of the Thunderbird Club. He enjoyed writing articles for the club’s newsletters and helping other members troubleshoot electrical and mechanical issues. Mike was also fascinated by trains; together with his wife, they created a detailed Lionel train set that never failed to impress visitors.

Michael is survived by Evelyn Schwartz of Richland, WA, Dan Schwartz – son, and Stefanie Reistad-Schwartz – daughter-in-law, of Marysville, WA, Richard Schwartz – son, of San Diego, CA, Lynn Steinmetz – sister of Walnut Creek, CA. Grandchildren Mikaela, Tristan, Meghan and Acacia Schwartz.

Michael is preceded in death by his parents Hyman and Eileen Schwartz, and his brother James Schwartz.

The family service for Michael Schwartz will be held on Friday, July 26th for a Celebration of Life at 11:00 in The Sunset Chapel at Einan’s Funeral Home.

Memorial donations can be made in Michael’s name to the Tri-Cities Cancer Center Foundation, 7350 W. Deschutes Ave, Kennewick, WA, 99336. 509-737-3413

  • I met Mike and Evelyn when their son Richard was in my Russian class at Hanford High School. What wonderful people! Mike was always so proud to tell me what Richard was doing in his life and career, and I was glad to hear! Mike was always kind and friendly whenever I ran into him, most often at Barracuda coffee. He will be missed by so many, and I wish you good memories and blessings.
