Norma Gustafson

Norma Gustafson (Daniels), aged 99, passed away on June 27, 2024, in Richland Washington.  Born on August 12, 1924, in Jackson, Wyoming, Norma was a woman of intelligence, zest for adventure and multiple talents.  She received a bachelor’s degree in education from Rick’s College and utilized her training for her career in teaching first through third grades, in the Richland School District, where her influence shaped many young minds.

Norma was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, where she participated actively in community and religious activities.  Her hobbies included piano playing, sewing, quilting, water and snow skiing, as well as engaged in word searches and crossword puzzles.  Her grandchildren were her greatest source of joy.  Norma was known for her quick wit, often expressed through idioms, and her clear communication style honed from her years as an educator.

Norma was always up for a challenge.  She went parachuting on her 80th birthday.  She enjoyed sneaking out to ride Lori’s race horse.  She and Gus spent many summers traveling in their RV, meeting at family reunions, and once making a memorable trip to Australia and New Zealand.

She is survived by her son Tod Gustafson, daughter Lori Saueressig, son-in-law David Saueressig, granddaughters Morgan, Jessica, Ashtyn, and grandson Dylan.  She has 4 great grandchildren.  Norma was also a cherished sister-in-law to Willard and Ophilia.  She was preceded in death by her parents, Leona and Scott Daniels, her beloved husband Leonard (Gus), and grandson Alex.  Norma and Gus celebrated their 69th wedding anniversary in December.  Her husband recently passed away in April and it was evident that she would join him shortly.  The support provided by their assisted living residence, Guardian Angels  and by Hospice was outstanding and appreciated by the family.

A funeral service will be held on August 17, 2024, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, followed by a celebration of life at Sunset Gardens, honoring both Norma and Gus.  Enian’s Funeral Home in Richland, Washington, is assisting the family during this time.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to SIGN Fracture Care International, an organization close to Norma’s ( and Gus’s )heart.  Norma’s legacy of fun, adventure and independence will be remembered by all who knew her.

  • I had Mrs. Gustafson as a teacher in 1st grade (Ms.Daniel) and then again in 5th grade ( Mrs. Gustafson)at Spaulding Elementary School. That was back in the 1950’s… Pretty strict teacher, but, also nice and a lot of fun. Looks like she had a great life.
