Dewey Elizabeth Hunter

Dewey Elizebeth Hunter passed away on July 26, 2024 in Richland Washington from age related illness.  She was 91 years old.

Dewey was born in Klamath Falls Oregon on May 4, 1933 to Alvion Dewey Lambert and Inez Bell Lambert.  She was an only child.  Dewey’s parents had many friends back in that time, but none of their friends had kids yet.  As a result, Dewey instantly became the center of attention of many would be parents!  She grew up in Klamath Falls and helped out with the family dry cleaning business located downtown.  The family also owned a small cabin near Spring Creek Oregon where they spent many summer weekends.  During the winter she would go skiing with her high school club called the Pelican Ski Club.

Dewey graduated from Klamath Union High School in 1951.  From there she went to the University of Oregon located in Eugene and earned a bachelor’s degree in education.  She graduated from college in 1955.  As fate would have it, Dewey along with her best friend from college, were recruited with attractive job offers to work in the Hanford area outside of the rapidly growing boom town of Richland Washington.  Those were fun times and an adventure that would ultimately last a lifetime!  It was only a few years later when Dewey met her future husband, David Hunter.  They got married on April 2nd 1960.

Dewey was active in the church in her younger years and very active in the PTA during her kids’ school years.  She enjoyed hosting bridge parties and would not pass up any opportunity to go dancing!  Dewey loved music and could name any popular tune from the mid 30’s to mid 50’s.  She would occasionally remind us that she did see Elvis Presley in concert when he was just starting out.  As a family we went to Lincoln City Oregon every year since it was one of her favorite places to vacation.  Dewey was an avid reader her whole life and covered a very broad range of genres.  She became particularly knowledgeable on a variety of collectible items including various figurines and plateware.  She very much enjoyed keeping a keen eye out for that one elusive collectible yet to be found!

During her retirement years, Dewey and Dave were able to travel and managed to take a few European vacations.  The highlight being the trip to London where she was finally able to visit everything related to the Queen of England and the Royal family.  Another highlight for Dewey was being a Grandma and making sure that there was always plenty of ice cream for everyone!

As a mother, she was proud of the fact that she could be a stay-at-home mom for the childhood years.  It was challenging for her with all boys, but with her love, dedication and good cooking, she made us a family.  She had a way of making you feel special and that you could accomplish anything in life that you chose.

Dewey and David maintained a loving and supportive marriage of over 60 years until David’s passing in 2021.  Dewey is survived by her two sons Gregory S Hunter (spouse Kathleen J Hunter) and Edward (Ted) D Hunter, and grandchildren Jennifer I Hunter, Michelle J Smith (spouse David Smith) and Tasha Rodriguez (spouse Hubert Rodriguez).

Graveside services will be held on August 3rd, 10 am at Sunset Gardens in Richland WA.  The family invites you to sign their online guest book.

  • I’m so sorry to hear of the loss of your sweet Mother. The old neighborhood home is still considered the “Hunter” house. I will never forget sliding down the stairway in the tub to the basement, before your Mom would say that was enough! Your Mom was such a gem, always so kind.
My heart is with you ~
