Paul Geoffrey Scharold
Paul Geoffrey Scharold, Born January 27th 1956 to Frank and Judith Scharold, present on this earth for a period of time until July 25th, 2024, at which time God called him to our final home.
During this time, limited as it is for all mortals, he led a life deeply committed to God, family, community, and the pursuit of knowledge and understanding of the universe we inhabit.
Paul earned a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry from Spring Arbor College in Michigan. Then, deciding that wasn’t quite enough, he continued his education with a Master of Science in Chemical Engineering from the University of North Dakota. His professional journey began at the now-decommissioned Hanford Nuclear Reservation, first as a chemical engineer working simulations and aiding in the cleanup effort, and later as a senior Information and Operational Technology Consultant for contractors at both Hanford and South Carolina. His innovative spirit was evident in his filing for several patents during his extensive career.
On a personal level, he involved himself in educational pursuits, starting from tutoring English in high school to later enhancing the science program at Coram Deo Academy. He also led numerous extra-curricular activities including the Calvinist Cadet Corps and Civil Air Patrol.
As a member of the Historic Preservation & Arts Commissions for the City of Kennewick, Paul played a vital role in the Historic Downtown Kennewick Partnership. He was celebrated as the “Downtowner of the Year” in 2010. His involvement included the renovation of his 1909 home, along with other renovation and preservation projects for buildings & houses over the years.
His commitment to preserving history was paralleled by his dedication to his faith as an elder at Grace United Reformed Church. As leader, mentor, committee chairman, and numerous other roles, he always worked humbly for the preservation and edification of the body of Christ.
Paul was known for his approachable demeanor, marked by a signature ponytail and sandals. He was a present and active parent and grandparent, always ready with a humorous quip or dependable advice. His critical thinking was a cornerstone of his personality, never content with accepting ideas without scrutiny.
His hobbies included bicycling, sailboarding, and choral singing, each reflecting his zest for life and love for the outdoors and music.
Paul is survived by his loving wife, Joyce Lorena (Buck) Scharold; children, Zoae Noelle (Peter) Spackman, Jubal Mika Scharold, Gedaliah Jesse (Adeline) Scharold, Karis Joseph Russell (Adrienne) Scharold, and Kara Victoria Elizabeth Scharold; grandchildren, Asa Paul Spackman, Titus Otheym Spackman, Leto Melchizedek Spackman, Nevaeh Dawn Eileen Scharold, Isabella Joyce Scharold, Aviana Jocelyn Scharold, Petra Isobel Scharold, Otto Alabaster Scharold, and Micah Zircon Scharold; siblings, Timothy Scharold, Jill Scharold, Amy Kempf, and Phil Scharold. He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Judith Scharold.
Paul’s legacy of faith, curiosity, community service, and familial devotion will be cherished and remembered by all who knew him.
Paul was ALWAYS the leader of our class when it came to being the smartest, but didn’t in such a humble manner. His Father was our family Doctor, so I knew Paul since Kindergarten. I had the privilege of seeing him by chance prior to the demolition of our school house. Paul was just a humble straight forward school mate and gentlemen. RIP Paul, you have more than earned it.
Joyce and Family,
Cecilia and I join with your in Grief & Celebration associated with Paul’s Life and Promotion to Glory!
It has been many years since Bata I, but in that place Life-Long Friendships were forged!
Joyce it was a joy to watch You and Paul date and it has been a joy to watch from a distance a marriage bloom! And amazing to observe as careers, community commitments, family and Faith mature!
Cecilia and I gave you in our Prayers!
Sincerely, Duane Fueslein
So sorry to hear this news. We worked together for 30 years, through more “winner” projects than I can count, and four different employers (UNC, Westinghouse, ICF Kaiser, and Fluor). A stabilizing force in our organization, mentor to all.
Joyce and family, so sorry to hear of the loss of Paul. We will be keeping you in our thoughts and prayers!
