Marguerite H. Campbell

September 12, 1933 – September 12, 2024

Marguerite Ann (Herndon) Campbell and her twin sister Marjorie were the youngest of 11 children born to Goldie Herndon Van Horssen and Pearl W. Herndon in their Manhattan, Montana family home. The family of 6 boys and 5 girls were raised by their hardworking mother, with older sisters helping care for “the twins”. She learned how to sew, garden, preserve food, and the art of cooking and hospitality from her mother. Marguerite was a good student and the only Herndon sibling to graduate from high school where she was a Cheerleader and played trumpet in band.

Marguerite married Milton H. Campbell June 8, 1952, a week after her high school graduation, and so began their 56 year life adventure. They located to Richland Washington in 1955 where Milton began his Hanford career and they raised their four children.  Her husband, children and her large Herndon family were always first priority. She was an accomplished bridge player, enjoying both contract and duplicate bridge. Marguerite and Milt loved to dance and gather with friends. They travelled extensively in retirement, especially enjoying their capstone Scotland trip and annual family beach vacations to the Oregon coast.

Marguerite had a heart for helping others. She volunteered at Jason Lee Grade School helping children learn to read, worked at the Richland Food Bank and served as a Wedding Hostess for many years at West Side Church where she was a member. She trained with Contact TeleMinistries of the Tri-Cities in 1990 and loyally manned the Crisis Help Lines for 16 years. She could be counted on to support her children’s activities including serving as a Cub Scout Den Mother and on the Board of Directors for the Washington State Twirling Council.

Marguerite was predeceased by her husband Milton (2008), son-in-law Stephen Smith (2022), her parents and 10 siblings. She is survived by her children, Shelly Campbell, Dan Campbell, Greg (Shari) Campbell and Cindy (Scott Dabbs), 9 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. We are very grateful to the staff at Windsong Memory Care for their kind loving care, and for creating joy in her daily life, and to Tri-Cities Chaplaincy Hospice for assuring her peaceful last days. The family has chosen to honor and celebrate her life privately.

Memorials may be made to Tri-Cities Chaplaincy or The Alzheimer’s Association-Washington State Chapter.

  • I was deeply saddened to learn of Marguerite’s transition. I will always remember her for her fiestiness, her fancy dance moves, her warm heart and willing to help. I she is at peace and watching over everyone and showing off that smile she always had. May the Campbell family know she filled a lot of hearts.

  • Such a bubbly person. I always noted a bit of a “gleam in her eye”!
I thought spoke of a hint of mischief
and mystery lurking beneath .the smile.
In her presence there was never any doubt who was in charge of the Campbell Clan .
May she rest in peace for a lovely life well lived.
