Carl A. Lorenzen
Carl A. Lorenzen, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and World War II veteran, passed away peacefully on September 27, 2024, in Richland, WA, at the age of 102. Carl’s family extends their deepest gratitude to the compassionate caregivers from Nuclear Care Partners whose dedication was a blessing to Carl and his loved ones. A man of extraordinary character, Carl lived a life defined by service, love and unwavering integrity.
Born near Meadow Grove, NE, to Bruno and Lida Lorenzen, Carl grew up alongside two brothers, Robert and Lorenz, who were also WWII veterans. Carl demonstrated a strong work ethic and commitment to his country. He worked for the Civil Conservation Corps and began his education at the University of Omaha before answering the call to serve after the attack on Pearl Harbor.
Carl volunteered for the Army Air Force Aviation Cadet Training Program earning his commission as a Second Lieutenant in June 1943 and graduating as a B-25 pilot. He served bravely in New Guinea, rising to the rank of First Lieutenant. He flew 45 combat missions and 34 weather reconnaissance missions. His service during the war was a testament to his courage and dedication to our country.
In March of 1945, Carl married Margaret Murphy of Tilden, NE. Their enduring partnership of 69 years was a source of strength and joy for both. Together they built a life filled with love, family and adventure. Carl earned a degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Denver and welcomed two sons while living in Denver. He began a career with General Electric at Hanford. They settled in Richland and welcomed two daughters. Carl retired in 1986. Carl and Margaret enjoyed a passion for square dancing and travel, spending many winters in AZ, creating cherished memories with friends and family.
Carl is preceded in death by his wife, Margaret; two sons, John (Mary) Lorenzen, Jerry Lorenzen and grandson, Nick Jennings. He is survived by his two daughters, Judy (Mike) Jennings and Jan (Marty) Robbins, six grandchildren, Dawn (Kevin) Tessandore, Sal Lorenzen, Kristopher (Bobi) Jennings, Carl (Heather) Lorenzen, Tyler (Kaylie) Robbins, Alyson (Ethan) Box, ten great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild. His legacy lives on through his support of the education of his grandchildren.
Carl and Margaret’s ashes will be laid to rest at Sunset Gardens Veteran’s Plaza at 915 Bypass Highway, Richland. WA on March 29, 2025, at 12:00 with Military Honors. All are invited to celebrate Carl’s remarkable life there. In lieu of flowers, please donate to a veteran’s organization of your choice.
Carl was a proud member of the Greatest Generation and faithful servant to his country and family. As we honor his life, we echo the words, “Well done, good and faithful servant. “Rest in peace, Carl.
