John “Jack” Francis Zeller
John (Jack) Francis Zeller, a man of honor, self respect, grit, and the cowboy way, passed away peacefully at home on December 1, 2024, surrounded by his loving family. Born on May 26, 1928, in St. Marys, Kansas, Jack lived a remarkable 96 years that were as vibrant and steadfast as the Western skies he loved.
Jack’s life was a testament to the rugged independence and values he admired in his hero, John Wayne. A cowboy through and through, Jack spent his younger years roaming, the White Bluffs of Washington and was a founding member of the Othello Rodeo in 1948, helping preserve the spirit of the Old West for generations to come.
At 17, he joined the United States Marine Corps, where he served with distinction in two enlistments. First at the end of WW2, in the Pacific Theater and again, when Truman called him back, to serve state side during the Korean War. He took great pride in his service to his country embodying the courage and resilience that defined his character.
Jack’s professional life was as varied as it was industrious. From working on the railroad to long-haul trucking, he eventually found his calling as an air balance technician with Exxon Nuclear in Richland, WA. Though he retired early due to medical reasons, his work ethic and dedication left an enduring legacy.
Jack’s love for the Western lifestyle extended beyond his work and hobbies-it was a philosophy he lived by. His admiration for John Wayne mirrored his own values: integrity, strength, and a steadfast loyalty to family and friends. He lived his life enjoying travel with Lyda traveling all over the country, especially in their RV. He loved watching old Western movies, reading Louis L’Amour and History books.
Jack was preceded in death by his mother, Viola Zeller; father, John Zeller; daughters Linda and Julie; his brother Don, nephew Gary and beloved son-in-law Tom Gaines.
Jack is survived by his wife of 45 years Lyda, son John Zeller (Kim), Lisa Zeller-Holis, Tammy Deery (Ken), Shelly Gaines, Elaine Jones (Gary), Jenee Bottineau-Worman (Matthew), Yvette Edmond and Wendy Dalpiaz (Brett). 30 Grandchildren, 25 Great-Grandchildren and 31 Great-Great Grandchildren. Brother Bernard, many nieces and nephews, all who will miss him dearly.
Jack’s legacy is one of hard work, loyalty, and his cowboy wisdom. He will be remembered for his blue eyes, dedication, being a ‘hard nose’ and grit.
As you ride off into the sunset, rest easy, cowboy-your trail rides on, in the hearts of those who knew and loved you – your now home.
