Scott Bernerd Call

Scott Call, 61, of Richland, WA, passed away at home on December 28, 2024, after fighting pancreatic cancer for several years – as well as living to the utmost after the diagnosis was received.

Scott was born to Arlan and Sherry Call on August 13, 1963, in Syracuse, NY.  Scott was well-traveled during his first year, as the family followed Arlan’s military training and assignments.

Scott was joined by twin brothers Pat and Sean in 1966, and the family was completed with Heather’s birth in 1968.  After Arlan completed his academic pursuits, the family settled in Twin Falls, ID.

After graduating from Twin Falls High School in 1981, Scott attended technical school in Idaho Falls.  His first big opportunity after his tech school graduation in 1982 took him to the Hanford Site outside of Richland as a health physics technician.  Scott remained in the Tri-Cities for the remainder of his life.  He held various positions in several different companies through these years, all related to his radiation control training and experience.  His most recent position was as a health physicist with the Hanford Site’s WRPS contractor – as he declared, his ‘dream job’.

Scott met Diane (Sommer) Jones at the 222S Labs on the Hanford Site, and they married in 1992.  Diane already had two children, Noah and Rachel; the family was completed when Tristan Call was born in November 1992.

Scott loved to create fabulous surroundings and experiences for himself and his family.  That involved significant hours dreaming about and sketching his dream home, built on a lot in South Richland that had a beautiful view.  When the family moved from that home, Scott still worked to upgrade their subsequent home’s interior and made ongoing improvements to landscaping.  Scott had his eyes on their current home for some time, which not coincidentally was next to his parent’s home.  Scott made sure the previous owner knew to call Scott when he was ready to sell.

Scott’s family – Diane and their son, Tristan, as well as Diane’s other children; his parents and siblings; grandparents and other extended family members – were always a priority to Scott.  He did whatever he could to spend time with them and provide support – and he treasured those hours.  He pulled them into his other interests whenever possible, but if family members weren’t available, he built and nourished friendships that allowed him to enjoy the activities that he loved.

As a teen in Twin Falls, Scott participated in a roller hockey league, an activity that son Tristan also embraced as a kid.  Scott enjoyed playing golf.  For a time, he had a great group of racquetball buddies that met multiple mornings each week.  Summer days would often mean hours spent in a boat on the river water-skiing, tubing – and once sinking a boat.  But his greatest passion was snow-skiing.  Scott learned to ski at Sun Valley, near the family home in Twin Falls; several uncles were responsible for encouraging and supporting development of his skills on skis.  When Scott and Diane met, Scott had already made several annual ski trips to Whitefish, Montana.  An annual Whitefish trip was on the schedule most years hence – including his final trip there in February 2024.  Scott also made an extended road trip in the winter of 2024 that incorporated time in Sun Valley with long-time friends, then he continued on to Utah to meet up with extended family members for more skiing and special time together.

Diane and Tristan greatly enjoyed their time on skis with Scott, and the opportunities he helped provide for multi-day ski trips through the years.  Tristan’s skiing prowess eventually caught up to Scott’s, and they spent a lot of time skiing challenging slopes together.

Another sporting interest was in motorcycles.  This started with enjoying dirt-bike adventures with friends when he was younger and later resulted in road bikes – especially BMW models – on which he commuted to work or took short trips.

Scott was physically active, but he also greatly enjoyed reading.  He read fiction, often from authors recommended by his dad, and he really enjoyed reading periodicals and non-fiction books.  His interests were varied and broad, though he frequently would consume science writing.

We would be remiss not to mention Scott’s love of dogs – not only the family’s dogs, but pretty much any dog he crossed paths with.  For the most part, dogs seemed to like Scott, too, so he was surprised when stepson Noah’s Rottweiler bit Scott on the behind!

Scott is survived by his wife, Diane, and son, Tristan; his parents Arlan and Sherry Call; his siblings Sean (Paula) Call, Pat Call, and Heather (Brian) Manley, and their families; mother-in-law Karen Sommer; sisters-in-law Dennett (Derek) Kolar and Denise Sommer, and their families; stepchildren Noah (Lauren) Jones and Rachel (Aaron) Alva, and their families.  Call aunts and uncles Reid (Becky), Phil (Mary), Gwen (Chips) Barlow, Bev (Jim) Davis, and Pam (Mike) Cook; Christensen aunts Barb (Craig) Miner and Joyce (Brad) Scheele, as well as aunt Carol’s widower Steve Permann.  Numerous cousins, including special cousin Brandon Call who shared ski time with Scott last winter.

Scott was preceded in death by both sets of grandparents, Merrill and Lorraine Call and Wes and (Armrell) Jean Christensen; his aunt Carol Permann; his father-in-law Keith Sommer.

A celebration of Scott’s life will be held on Friday, February 7, 2025, 2 p.m., at Einan’s Sunset Funeral Home with a reception to follow.                                         915 Bypass Hwy Richland, WA 99352

We hope those who knew him will join us there; you will have an opportunity to share a memory of Scott.

  • So many fond memories with Scott. I remember when we use to stay with Sherry & Arlan and Scott was just a kid! He introduced me to a group I was unfamiliar with at the time and would play their music, which happened to be’The EAGLES’! Since then they’ve become one of my favorite groups and I can thank Scott for playing their music so many years ago.
Most recently we’ve made a couple trips up to visit and just this past fall went Brad and I went golfing with him and out to dinner with him and Diane. We always looked forward to going up each year and visit. Am going to miss you Scott, you’ve truly been an incredible example to us.

  • When I was 9 years old, I was blessed to become a firs time Aunt when Scott was born. What a fun time that was and our Dad, Wes Christensen was thrilled to have a boy join our family. It was so fun to watch him grow. We loved having Sherry and Arlan come to visit with us so we could spend time with him. What a fine young man he grew to be with endless energy-always looking for fun things to do or working on a project. He was a wonderful Son, Brother, Husband, Father and Nephew. Always watching out for others. He especially took great care of his Mom and Dad. I am grateful that we were able to spend more time with him in the past 3 years in our visits to Richland. I am grateful to call him Nephew. He touched my life in many ways through his strength and endurance during very difficult time. Love you Scott Call…till we meet again.
