Larry Everton Roney
Larry Everton Roney, 85, of Kennewick, WA, passed away peacefully on April 24, 2025. Born at Fort Lewis, WA, to Mary Jane Maunder and James L. Roney. Larry’s early years were spent moving up and down the Western U.S. due to his father’s career in the military.
Larry proudly served his country in the U.S. Army, completing six months of active duty at Fort Ord, CA, from April to October 1957. In October 1957, he reenlisted in the U.S. Air Force and completed radar operator school at Keesler AFB in Mississippi before serving at various bases, including Othello AFB in Washington and Elmendorf AFB in Alaska.
After his military service, Larry worked at Boise Cascade Container Corp. in Wallula, WA, from 1961 to 1968, holding several positions including assistant press operator, fork-lift driver, oiler, and die mounter. During this time, he became the union president and played a significant role in a 42-day strike that shaped the future of union negotiations. Larry’s service to the community continued as a dedicated firefighter with the Richland Fire Department, where he retired in 1997 with the rank of Battalion Chief after serving for nearly 30 years.
Larry was married three times, first to Lillian E. Johnson (no children), then to Alice L. Bias, with whom he had two sons, Michael and David. In 1978, he married Pamela C. Caldwell, with whom he shared the “best marriage ever,” and they had three children: Jennifer, Shelby, and Christopher.
Known for his love of the outdoors, Larry spent many hours fishing at White Bluffs, one of his favorite fishing locations. He also enjoyed camping with family. Larry had a passion for motorcycles, having raced on flat tracks in his younger years. Larry had a passion for cars, which included not only being a longtime car enthusiast but also working on cars, watching NASCAR, and drag races. Larry was also a founding member of the Tri-Cities Cruisers car club.
Larry is survived by his beloved wife, Pamela; sons, Michael (Lori) and David (Mari); daughters, Jennifer (Wendy), Shelby, and son Christopher (Heather); grandchildren, Tyler, Daniel, Jared, Riley, Hunter, Bryce, and Colten; and numerous extended family and friends. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
Gonna miss you at our quarterly retirement lunches. You were always fair and honest with us and you helped us personally any time you could…I loved to beat you a couple times in poker, but most of the time you were handing me back my billfold after dripping it dry for remaining money still owed lol. You were a good family man and a loyal softball player…. You have earned a spot at the table with th lord and we shall all meet up there soon. Rest in piece my brother and we will all meet again!!
