From Richland, WA | Born in Sacramento, CA
Alice W Quinley
Alice Virginia Woofter Quinley, 100, passed away peacefully in Richland, WA, Nov 22, 2025.
Alice was born in Sacramento, California, on July 23, then lived most of her growing up years in Spirit Lake, Idaho, where her father worked for the Milwaukee Railroad. She was an outdoor girl, loving swimming and hiking in the summers and romping in the snow in winter. When Alice was in high school the town of Spirit Lake burned and her family was forced to move to Spokane, where she graduated from Lewis and Clark. Being a majorette was a favorite memory from that time. She then attended University of Idaho where she pledged Kappa Alpha Theta.
The Hanford area was hiring and paying large salaries, so Alice left college to take a job with GE in Richland, WA. At work she met this tall, handsome man, Glenn Quinley. They dated 6 months then got married on Oct 29, 1950. Four years later their daughter, Virginia Eline, was born, at which point Alice became a stay-at-home mom, but continued working part-time, teaching swimming at the George Prout Memorial pool, where she soon became head instructor. She also taught shorthand at night school for several years.
Alice’s love of history, kindled by a favorite history teacher, led to her love of maps and travel. It also spurred her to be more Civic-minded. She served on the first Richland Park board (now Parks and Recreation). Her interest in city politics led to her appointment on the City Personnel board.
In 1968 she went back to work full-time at Kadlec Hospital. Richland was on the verge of a financial campaign to build a new hospital. Alice worked on the campaign and in 1970, when the new medical center opened, Alice became the first Personnel Director and remained in that position until her retirement in 1988.
After retiring, she took a part-time job at the Book Place in Richland, working with good friends Phyllis Bowersock and Shirley Miller, owners of the independently-owned bookstore.
Alice’s passions were for performing arts (music and theatre) and travel. Her daughter, Virginia (“Ginny”) inherited these passions, as well. Alice and Glenn never missed one of her productions at CBC, nor her shows at the Richland Players. Alice’s love of travel took her to Hawaii, Mexico, and many countries in Europe. An opera tour to Italy was a special favorite.
Throughout her life Alice volunteered, working the Richland Players box office and the Gallery at the Park. She also served on the Allied Arts Association and Community Concert boards. Alice attended CUP church and then Shalom United Church of Christ. She was active in her PEO chapter, an organization she loved, and served as their president.
Alice is preceded in death by her parents, Berlin and Emma Woofter, her older sister Eline Mettel, and
her husband, Glenn Quinley. She is survived by her daughter, Virginia (Lee Neth); her younger
sister, Nancy Grant; nieces Alicia Hollis (Gordon Williams) and Andrea Christine (Todd Holdcroft), grandnephew Alexander Kaempf; and many dear and close friends.
On behalf of Community Concerts of the Tri-Cities (formerly Richland Community Concerts), I would like to express our condolences to Alice Quinley’s family. After her long service on our Board, Alice was made an honorary Board member for her exceptional service to the organization. She helped make the Tri-Cities a more culturally rich place.
Ginny – I don’t take the newspaper and only recently heard of your Mom’s passing. Oh, I have such great memories of our time at George Prout pool, and I was so touched when you all came to my wedding so long ago. She was a person of amazing energy and a true force of nature. (I can see that you inherited that from her.) She was so proud of you – keep up the good work.. – Linnea
