Tremaine “Trim” Smith
February 13, 1956 – December 13, 2025
Tremaine (Trim) John Smith, our beloved husband, Dad, Papa, brother, uncle and friend passed away December 13, 2025 after a very courageous battle with cancer. He was born in Yakima, WA along with his twin sister Jeanine on February 13, 1956. They were adopted at birth by Dean and Judy Smith in Wapato, WA. Trim’s family moved to Spokane in 1969 when his dad accepted a position as United State Attorney for Eastern Washington. Trim graduated from Mead High School in 1974 and Washington State University in 1978. This is where he met his wife of 47 years, Lindy (Johnson) Smith.
In 1978 Trim started his career with the State of Washington Department of Revenue where he served until his retirement in 2011. He met and maintained many friendships during that time.
After concluding his long tenure with the Department of Revenue, Trim embraced a new professional chapter by joining Ernst & Young Accounting Firm in Seattle in September 2011, where he applied his expertise in Washington State and Local Tax until his second retirement in 2023.
Some of Trim’s fondest memories were the summers he spent at the family cabin on Hayden Lake with his sister and cousins. He was very passionate about snow skiing, water skiing, boating on the Columbia River and most of all golfing. Above everything, Trim cherished every moment spent with his family. As a devoted Cougar fan, he took great pride cheering on his team. He especially enjoyed attending Richland High School Bombers basketball and baseball games with his grandson, Kyle.
In addition to Lindy, Trim is survived by his immense pride and joy, his children: daughter Stephanie, son Corey, daughter-in-law Lindsey: his grandchildren: Kyle, Penelope, Kaylee and Theodore.
He is also survived by his sister Jeanine, her son Benjamin, Lindy’s siblings, Randy (Lea), Don (Louisa), Laurie, Lisa (Mary Pat), and Patty (Bryan). He is survived by many nieces, nephews and cousins. Trim was preceded in death by his parents; Dean and Judy, Lindy’s parents; Harry and Norma and his brother-in-law, Kelly Corr.
A celebration of Trim’s life will be held April 11, 2026, at 3:00pm, at Einan’s Sunset Gardens Event Center, 915 Bypass Hwy, Richland. Memorial gifts can be made to Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center online at Trim’s Donation Link or mailed to Fred Hutch, 1100 Fairview Ave N. Mail Stop LG-400 Seattle, WA 98109-1024. Please make sure to include Trim’s name if mailing in a donation.
Trim was a devoted husband, Dad, Papa, uncle and friend whose warmth and kindness touched everyone he met. He was known for his quick wit, infectious laughter and extreme generosity. As we remember Trim, we honor a life well-lived, marked by feats of unwavering courage, dedication and enduring love for family and friends. Whether he was cheering on the Cougars and Bombers or enjoying a sunny day on the golf course, Trim brought joy and positivity to every occasion. He will be missed but deeply cherished in the hearts of those who knew him. May he rest in peace.
Trim was one of the most generous individuals with his time and expertise while I worked with him during his time at EY. He had a very calm and helping demeanor with anyone he worked with. Always willing to help and give his knowledge to anyone who asked. He commonly took calls from the golf course and other inconvenient locations to assist whenever called. He was very well respected by all and a joy to work with. Thank you to his family for allowing him to share his valuable time with his EY colleagues. Truely a unique individual and special in many ways.
I am deeply saddened to hear that Trim has passed away. I will always remember him for his warm smile, infectious laughter, and his willingness to help others. He had an optimistic way of brightening the mood in every room. A wonderful friend and colleague to so many of us at Ernst & Young, he will be deeply missed and fondly remembered.
I first met Trim in 1993 when he trained me as an auditor for the Washington Department of Revenue. He and Brad Flaherty were the best trainers, bringing a lot of fun and laughter to the training – particularly one morning after “The Contest” Seinfeld episode played the night before, which of course we all had watched. Trim and I stayed in touch through the years and really reconnected when I learned that he was going to retire from EY and I wanted his job. He was amazing in helping to get me very quickly connected and hired. It was great that I got to overlap with Trim at EY for a year and he helped get me integrated as he started winding down his career. I am so appreciative of the common sense and humor Trim brought to Washington state tax work. I still often try and channel Trim’s approach. Thanks for everything, Trim!
Trim was a great friend and mentor during his time at Ernst & Young. I have many memories of great personal conversations while traveling with Trim over the years. He will truly be missed by so many!
I am so sad to hear of Trim’s passing. I only knew him for a short period of time during his second career at Ernst & Young. But in that short time, everyone that got to know him got to really know a fine individual. He was a consummate professional, very knowledgeable, and was a genuinely nice guy. My condolences to his entire family.
I was sad to hear of Trim’s passing. I worked for him and always appreciated his laughter & kindness to others. I’m sure I caused a few headaches 🙂 We had many spirited discussions about the Cougs, Zags, and Queen.
Praying for those who loved him that they can find peace in the difficult days to come.
I’m so sorry for the sad loss of Trim. I’ve known you all for so long. He was always the kindest to me and laughed at my jokes or silliness. I known everyone in his family and watched them all grow and live well. He left his mark on all of you. He will always be with you forever. You will hear his voice in your head and feel him in your heart. Just pause and listen and he will guide you. ❤️
I’m thinking of each of you. I love you all, Cyndi Sim
I was one of Trim’s cousins and I too, remember fondly those summers @ Hayden Lake – water skiing, jumping in the lake to bathe, playing German Flashlight after dinner, etc. He was a wonderful person and will be deeply missed.
