Althea Guttenberg

Althea Rose Guttenberg, wonderful wife, Mom, Grandma, and Grammy, passed away on April 24, 2026, at the age of 88. Althea was born on May 7, 1937, in McKeesport, Pennsylvania, to Jerry and Lillian Arlen. After completing her education, Althea moved to Pittsburgh where she met her husband, Sol, and they married on May 6, 1961. Sol and Althea were married for more than 63 years, and they shared a bond that transcended everything that came their way.

Shortly after marrying, Sol and Althea moved to Las Vegas, where they welcomed their daughter Michelle in 1963 and their daughter Cheryl in 1965. In 1971, Althea, Sol and their daughters moved to Kennewick, where Althea focused on raising Michelle and Cheryl, teaching many of life’s important lessons, driving them to numerous activities, cheering for them in good times and supporting them in tougher times. When the girls were older, Althea returned to work as a Paraeducator at Kennewick High School. Althea was very involved in District initiatives and committees, attended games and dances, and was an officer in PSE. Althea had a special way of reaching teenagers, and many came to her to discuss their concerns and life experiences. Althea retired in 1999, and she and Sol then traveled to many amazing places, enjoying exploring the world together.

Althea was the epitome of a good friend, and she had many long-term friendships. Althea loved nothing more than spending time with her grandkids, and they loved spending time with her. Althea also enjoyed family vacations, dancing with Sol, shopping, and Bunco. Althea had a fun sense of humor and loved being silly with the grandkids.

Althea was the heart of the family, and she and Sol taught us that Family is Everything. Althea is survived by her daughters, Michelle (Steve) and Cheryl (Mike), her grandchildren, Miriam, Jared, Gabriel and Jenna, and her great-granddaughter, Emmy. She was preceded in death by her husband, Sol, and her grandson, Marcus. The family is having a private service. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, a charity which Althea supported for many years.

  • As long as I can remember, Althea was part of my life.
Some of my favorite memories are of her sitting around the table with my parents, playing cards and laughing.

She was such a good, loyal friend to my mom. She showed up in ways that truly mattered, especially in the hardest times. She continued to regularly visit my mom in hospice care. That kind of care and dedication says everything about who she was.

I’ll always think of her when I see the Children’s Hospital calendar — something she made sure my mom had every year. It’s been a staple on our fridge for decades, and honestly, the fridge just wouldn’t look the same without it. It’s one of those quiet, steady things that became part of our home, and every time I see it, I’ll think of Althea.

I will miss her, but there’s comfort in imagining her reunited with Sol and my mom, maybe even playing some cards.
