Irene Barnes
Irene B Barnes, 93, of Richland, Washington, passed away surrounded by family on April 28, 2026. Born on April 2, 1933, in Portland, Oregon. Irene lived a full and vibrant life that touched everyone who knew her.
Irene was a strong woman with a spirit to match. Her signature red hair, a color all its own, made her instantly recognizable wherever she went, and her personality was every bit as unforgettable. In 1954,she married the boy from down the street, John R Barnes, and the two built a life and family together. She was a homemaker until her children were grown and then worked alongside John at his practice. When John retired, the two of them took on a new adventure, working side by side at Wood’s nursery. Whether in work or in life, they were true partners.
Irene had a wide range of passions. She loved to travel and explore new places, and she had a particular fondness for visiting wineries and casinos. At home, she could often be found behind her sewing machine or in the kitchen, where she was a talented cook. She had a generous heart and gave faithfully to several charities, including Shriner’s and St. Jude’s, reflecting her deep care for others, especially children in need.
Irene was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Dr. John R Barnes; daughter, Tami L Scott; son-in- laws, Dean L Scott; and Brett R Pettibon. She is survived by her daughter, Debbie K Hardman of Richland (Scott); her son, John S Barnes of Olympia (Debbie); and her daughter, Terrie A Pettibon of Seattle. She is also survived by seven grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren. Her family was the center of her world, and she never stopped encouraging them.
Irene’s faith was a steady anchor throughout her life, and her family takes comfort in knowing she is now at peace in the arms of the Lord, reunited with those who went before her.
A memorial service will be held on June 6, 2026, at 11 AM, at Southridge Church, 3315 S. Sherman Street, Kennewick, Washington. A reception will follow immediately after the service at the church. All who knew and loved Irene are welcome to attend and celebrate her remarkable life.
We miss her deeply, but we are grateful we had her with us for as long as we did. She leaves behind a legacy of strength, love, and the unwavering belief that anything is possible
