Wayne Lucas Suggs
July 14, 1942-April 6, 2026

Wayne Lucas Suggs, age 83, passed away at home in Richland, Washington, on April 6, 2026, surrounded by his beloved family.
Born on July 14, 1942, in Darlington, South Carolina, Wayne was taught the love, faith, duty, loyalty, and gentle humor that would define his life. He used those qualities to positively impact countless people throughout his life.
Wayne was a devoted husband for 61 years to his sweetheart Susan, and a proud and loving father to Maryl (Bruce), Joe (Brigitte), Dan (Laurie), Kerrie (Reed), Howard (Willa), David (Tiffany), and Nate (Melanie). His family was the center of his life and his greatest joy. He adored being a grandfather to 39 grandchildren and a great-grandfather to 29
great-grandchildren and, if given the choice, would have gladly skipped the father step and gone straight to grandfather. He especially loved his grandbabies, and everyone who knew him recognized the joy he found in holding and caring for the youngest members of his family.
Wayne was preceded in death by his wonderful parents Winston and Modena. He took his role as the oldest child seriously and tried his best to set a good example for his younger siblings Don {Lorna), Joye (Bill), John (Barbara), Dena (Earl), Susan (Steve), Michelle (Jeff), and Alex (Rhonda).

Wayne dedicated four decades of his professional life to public libraries, serving his communities with passion and integrity. His career included roles as Library Director in Albany, Oregon, from 1973 to 1990 and in Richland, Washington, from 1990 to 2006, where he oversaw large projects, including plans for remodeling and expanding the library, although he retired before seeing the project to completion. Through his work, Wayne fostered a love of learning, literacy, and community connection that impacted countless lives.
As much as he enjoyed his professional career, he found more purpose, importance, joy, and fulfillment serving his God. Wayne was an active and faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, where he served faithfully throughout his life. From 1961-1964, he served a 2½ year mission in France and Belgium, an experience that deeply shaped his faith and lifelong dedication to serving others. His greatest act of devotion to God was being a loving husband and father.

Music was one of Wayne’s great loves, from 1950’s Rock and Roll to choral music to classical and all styles in between, the genre mattered less than whether there was simply music playing. He had a song for literally anything you could say and he shared that passion generously with his family, creating lasting memories through song and togetherness.
Wayne would probably not have cared too much for this obituary, as things were never about him, but there’s nothing he can do about that now. He would be happy knowing Mom Bear is taken care of and that we turned off the lights as we left the room.

  • I have lots of happy memories of Grandpa playing with me, siblings, and cousins. Also, it seems like all the time’, I’ll say a joke or sing a song, and a sibling will point out that it came from Grandpa. Love you Grandpa

  • Susan and family,

I had the privilege of working with Wayne, both professionally and in the Church, in the late 1970s and most of the 1980s. His kind demeanor, dedication to the things he believed in, and ready sense of humor made him a delight to work with and we became good friends. My heartfelt condolences to you at his passing.

  • I am so sorry Maryl and family!!!!! I remember going to the Pomona Public Library with you in the early 70s and your dad came out to the parking lot and was standing by the van talking to your mom. Memories like that are comforting at times like this. May the love of those around you bring you comfort in the coming days and a lifetime of wonderful cherished memories sustain you in the years ahead. My condolences and sympathy to all of you!

  • Wayne Suggs led the Richland Public library to excellence. He crafted a team of people dedicated to service. His genuine and deep commitment to Richland created the support for a construction bond that passed the first time, with over 60% approval.
A building bond passes after years and years of work to connect with the community and provide library service that answers their needs.
His work and his team created the environment for a successful expansion and remodel. Our thanks go to Wayne for the continuing excellence of our Library.

  • I was blessed with the opportunity to spend a large portion of my childhood driving down to Silverton to see my grandparents; and some of my fondest and most vivid memories of growing up are of the time spent with Grandpa. I spent so many General Conference sessions asleep on his lap, we played through every board game in the kid closet, and went on many hikes. Him and Grandma took Sherisse and I on many trips to the library, to deposit root beer cans for coins, and to the dollar store where we were each given a dollar to choose anything we wanted. Grandpa taught me how to dip chocolates, read me every kids book on the shelf, sat me on his lap to steer the Model A, and many more things. My love for baking, books, and board games are much in thanks to him. Grandpa had a significant impact on who I am as a person, and I am ever grateful for the relationship we had. I love you Grandpa, I miss you, and I look forward to when we are reunited and can share a Snickers bar again.

  • He was the best grandpa you could wish for. Though my family lived abroad during my childhood years and only visited every other summer, those summers will always be core memories: singing songs around the piano or organ, playing with the large and assorted collection of toys saved through the decades, admiring his extensive model train set, playing music on his homemade hammer and thumb dulcimers. Though in my recollection he was often off to the side or in the background of these scenes, his quiet, selfless, loving presence is a strong part of each memory.

  • Wayne will always be remembered fondly by us and our family. Always kind, forever faithful. As a bishopric member
I remember often shaperoning youth dances where Wayne was doing the same representing the stake presidency. He would always carry a newspaper and a flashlight. If standing in the corner of the cultural hall he couldn’t read the newspaper the lighting needed to be increased. If he came up to a couple dacing a slow dance and he couldn’t shine the light freely between them, they were too close. We all chuckled at that but there were important life lessons to be learned. He was a Rock! Love him forever.

  • Wayne was my boss at the Richland Library and recognized that I had a love for community programming. He pushed me to step out of my comfort zone and gave me free rein to create fun and informative programs. I remember when we were closed having new carpet installed and he let us all pick our favorite tunes to blast over the intercom system. He was a wonderful man and I am so grateful for his guidance.
