Rodney Morris Jones
Rodney Morris Jones was born April 20, 1945, in Spokane, Washington to Bob and Kay Jones. He passed away peacefully on June 2, 2026 surrounded by family. Rod was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Marilyn. He was a beloved husband, father, brother, grandpa, uncle, and friend.
Rod grew up in the Spokane area and attended Shadle Park High School. He went on to graduate from Washington State University with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. Shortly after graduation, Rod interviewed with Battelle and was excited to begin his engineering career. Those plans were delayed by his service in the Vietnam War as an Army combat engineer. Following his military service, he eagerly began his career at Battelle, where he worked with dedication and pride until his retirement.
Rod married Karen Smasne, his lifelong sweetheart, on September 18, 1972. As they neared their 54th wedding anniversary, their enduring devotion to one another stood as a shining example of lasting love and dedication. Initially nervous about meeting Karen’s family, Rod was warmly welcomed by the Smasne clan, who introduced him to the role of part-time grape harvester—an experience he thoroughly enjoyed.
Rod had a lifelong passion for steam engines, trains, machinery, and building projects of every kind. He spent many happy hours working in the woods on his parents’ Spokane Valley property. In his earlier years, he was a proud member of Ye Olde Car Club and owner of a vintage Ford-Maxwell automobile.
Rod was a kind and generous person who was always willing to lend a helping hand to anyone in need. He possessed a wide range of skills and talents, which he readily shared with family, friends, and neighbors. His grandchildren fondly remember his famous banana pancakes and the many trips to the swimming pool and park. Through his example, he inspired them to become builders and problem-solvers themselves. His daughters cherish memories of camping, boating, and fishing adventures with their dad.
Rod is survived by his beloved wife of nearly 54 years, Karen; his daughters, Kim (Jim) Bucklin and Carleen Rietz; and his treasured grandchildren, Kelsey, Kaylie, Natalia, Lindsey, and Joy, all of whom brought him great pride and joy. He is also survived by his brother, Jim (Sue) Jones and Karen’s twin sister, Sharon Hudnall.
Rod will be laid to rest in a private ceremony at Einan’s Sunset Garden.
Rod’s family would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to the wonderful caregivers at NorthCare Pasco for their patience and kindness to Rod during his most difficult season of life.
