Benjamin Franklin Draper

Benjamin Draper II, a cherished husband, devoted father, and beloved grandfather, passed away on August 11, 2026, at the age of 82. Born on September 30, 1943, in Tacoma, Washington, Ben was the son of the late Benjamin Franklin Draper and Marion Rainey Draper. He was preceded in death by his grandparents George (Bop) and Agnes (Gram) Rainey, his parents and sister Becky.

Ben is survived by his loving wife of nearly 62 years, Joyce Swank, with whom he shared a life full of love and adventure since their marriage on September 12, 1964. Together, they built a beautiful family and a legacy of warmth and kindness that will endure for generations.

He was a proud father to Kimberly (Christopher) Kruger and Lara (Travis) Clower, who were inspired by his integrity and dedication. Ben’s legacy continues through his cherished grandchildren, Ryan Kruger, Gretchen and Paige Clower, who brought immense joy to his life. He is also survived by his siblings, Michael Draper and Judith Calhoun, sister-in-law Linda Lantis, brother-in-law Bill Swank and numerous nieces and nephews.

Ben spent his early years growing up in Tacoma, Washington, with fond memories of his time with his beloved grandparents, Bop and Gram.  He also lived and went to school in Japan and Germany where his father was stationed in the military. Ben graduated from Lincoln High School in Tacoma in 1961.  A veteran, Ben served his country with honor in the Air Force for four years while stationed in Spokane, Washington at Fairchild Airforce base.

Ben pursued higher education at the University of Puget Sound, earning a Bachelor of Business Administration degree that would be the foundation of his 45-year career in the fire protection industry. His work took him from Washington, then to Colorado, Texas and Georgia before returning back to the Pacific Northwest where he resided in Richland, Washington until his passing.
Beyond his professional and military accomplishments, Ben enjoyed spending time traveling with Joyce, visiting the national parks, numerous Alaskan and Panama Canal cruises with friends as well as overseas trips to Italy, Ireland and Germany. He enjoyed golfing with his group of guy friends through the years. He was also an avid reader with a love of history novels.

Benjamin’s passing leaves a void in the hearts of all who knew him, but his life is a testament to the power of love, dedication, and kindness. Benjamin’s memory will forever be a guiding light to his family and friends, and his spirit will live on in the stories and memories.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Tunnel to Towers Foundation at T2T.org.
