Corky Greenfield

Corky Elzer Greenfield, 83, of Richland, died Aug. 23 in Richland.

She was born in Los Angeles, California, in 1942, and grew up around famous stars through her dad’s connection to the Hollywood movie industry during the McCarthy era and this really shaped who she was.

She married Jerry Greenfield in 1963 in Wilshire Boulevard Temple in Los Angeles, California. They moved with their only child, Katrina (Katie), to Richland in 1978.

Corky was a friend to all who crossed her path, from the clerks at Yoke’s Fresh Market in Richland to her housecleaner. She was a longtime member of the Richland Kiwanis Club and the Tri-Cities Industry Kiwanis Club.

One of her greatest joys in life were her grandsons, Willem and Tyler Hanevelt. She was close to both and adored them, and especially enjoyed forming a special bond with Willem, who lived with the Greenfields for the past four years. She was a second parent to many of her daughter’s friends and others in her circle. Her laugh was infectious and her outlook on life upbeat. She didn’t suffer fools and had strong opinions on everything.

She was an avid bridge player, earning a Junior Master level, though hadn’t been playing in a while. She enjoyed sharing a meal with family and friends and shopping made her happy, as did fast cars. She doted on her dogs, Gary and Max. She was a longtime arts supporter, and she and her husband collected art for years. Friends described her as indestructible – and she was. She was a breast cancer survivor for nearly 30 years, but it was a sudden heart attack that took her from us.

She is survived by her husband; daughter Katrina Greenfield Hanevelt of Victoria, B.C.; grandsons Willem Hanevelt of Richland and Tyler Hanevelt of Weyburn, Saskatchewan; former son-in-law Jay Hanevelt; and sister Eileen Miller of Scottsdale, Arizona.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Louise and Norman Elzer.

A celebration of life is scheduled for noon Friday, Aug. 28 at Einan’s at Sunset Funeral Home, 915 Bypass Highway, in Richland.

  • So sad to learn of Corky’s passing. She was a dear friend of my Mom and a “shoe fairly” to me! What beautiful Italian loafers came my way as we had the same shoe size. I have many wonderful memories of spending time with she and Jerry over a nice bottle of red and sharing stories of the old Los Angeles/Hollywood where she grew up in & I knew of. My heartfelt sympathies to her family & all who knew and loved her.
