Jim R. Nelson was born November 23, 1948, to Lyman and Martha Nelson in Richland, Washington. Not without a fight, his life ended peacefully on August 31, 2026, at Richland Gardens with family by his side.

Jim, born and raised in Richland, was a hometown boy for all of his 77 years and was a contributor to the Tri-Cities and its development. A business owner, farmer, millwright, firefighter, husband, father, grandfather, uncle, and cousin to many. A life full of hot rods, family, and racing.

Jim made his home on the family farm established in the 1890s, facing many challenges and changes but never wavering on where he was most comfortable and belonged. Although not the family farm it once was, it was his.

Jim had a passion to learn, to be better and more knowledgeable than the day before, to challenge oneself, to grow and to develop, and to teach others. To share his wisdom, his talents, and his skills with anyone who showed interest in making themselves better.

The lifelong pursuit of speed and adrenaline never wavered in his 77 years, which took him all across the United States and across the pond to Australia. Motocross, karting, NASCAR, Trans-Am road racing, and sprint boats kept him challenged and nurtured his ability to find more speed, to adapt to new ways, and to overcome any challenge that was presented before him.

He was preceded in death by his father, Lyman Nelson; his mother, Martha Nelson; and his sister, Dorothy Canoy. Jim is survived by his wife, Susan Nelson; son, Tom Nelson (Celeste); grandchildren, Broc, Torino, and Sloan Nelson; brother, Charles Nelson; and a family full of cousins, nieces, and nephews.

Jim will be laid to rest next to his father and mother at Rest Haven Cemetery in Richland on September 11, 2026. Viewing will be from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., with a Celebration of Life from 12:00 to 2:00 p.m. and final laying of rest at 3:00 p.m.

The family is forever grateful for the countless family and friends who came to his bedside during his struggles these past few months.
