Richard Lee Romanelli, born on November 28, 1938, in New York, NY, passed away on August 8, 2026, in Kennewick, WA. As the eldest of eleven children, Richard’s journey began in New York City before his family moved to California and ultimately settled in Washington State. He pursued higher education at Reed College in Portland, OR, before earning his Bachelor’s degree from the University of Washington in Seattle. Richard began his career as a reporter with the Tri-Cities Herald and later dedicated many years as a public relations manager at Energy Northwest. After retirement, Richard worked for Pacific Northwest National Laboratory as a tours and events specialist and then at Indian Eyes as a Hanford B Reactor tour docent., leaving behind a legacy of commitment to his profession and community. A proud veteran, he served in the U.S. Army, enlisting in 1963, and achieved the rank of Specialist E-4 before being discharged in 1965.

Richard is survived by his beloved spouse of 58 years, Melvina Romanelli; his son, Nathaniel Romanelli; and his daughter, Julia Romanelli. He was a devoted family man who cherished the moments spent with his loved ones, nurturing in them a lasting passion for knowledge and service.

An individual of varied interests, Richard found joy in gardening, landscaping, playing the cello, and attending classical music concerts, embodying his deep appreciation for the arts. He was an avid hiker and traveler, exploring the landscapes of the United States and Europe, and had a particular fondness for wine tasting. His fascination with the cultural traditions of Pacific Northwest tribal nations reflected his respect for history and heritage.

Richard devoted his time to numerous volunteer efforts, contributing to the Friends of the Richland Public Library, B Reactor Museum Association, Lower Columbia Basin Audubon Society, and The Reach. He served as the President and/or board member for the Mid-Columbia Symphony, Richland Lions Club, and the Tapteal Greenway, where his leadership and dedication made a significant impact.

Richard’s presence will be profoundly missed by those who knew him. His commitment to family, community, and the causes he championed will be cherished and remembered fondly.

Richard was preceded in death by his father and mother, Samuel Romanelli and Edna Pierce Romanelli; sibilings Christopher Romanelli, Timothy Romanelli, Nina Ransier, and Carol Brown. He is survived by his siblings Christine DeVilleneuve, Jeffrey Romanelli, Jonathan Romanelli, Rebecca Romanelli, Matthew Romanelli, and Andrew Romanelli.
