Vera Mae Metcalf

Vera Mae Metcalf passed away at the age of 101 on September 26, 2026, surrounded by her loved ones. Born to Harry and Lillian Chambers, Vera grew up in Bickleton, Washington. On June 17, 1942, she married Lee Metcalf, beginning a partnership that shaped the course of her life for decades. She now joins Lee, her sister Ona Minnick, her brothers Bob Chambers, Dick Chambers, Don Chambers, Harry (Buck) Chambers Jr., and Jim Chambers. Also awaiting her arrival were her son‑in‑law Karl Rummel and her grandson Karl Rummel Jr.

Vera became the mother of Carole Rummel, marking the beginning of the second generation of her family. Through Carole’s marriage to Karl Rummel, the family expanded into a third generation with the births of Karl Rummel Jr. and Norman Rummel, marking Vera’s transition from parent to grandparent.

The fourth generation followed with her great‑grandchildren-Michelle Rummel, Dylan Rummel, and Madison Rummel-adding another layer to the family’s continuity. Vera lived to see them grow into their own roles within the extended family. In time, her family reached a fifth generation with great‑great‑grandchildren, Taylor Speer, Payton Speer, and Jaxon Rummel placing Vera at the head of a family spanning five living generations.

Across these decades, several family members-Carole, Norm, Michelle, Dylan and Madison-took on planning and organizational roles that helped maintain structure around gatherings and family events. Vera upheld the Christmas tradition by hosting Christmas Eve every year, always choosing the perfect tree and decorating it with care.

Her life was also defined by the travels she shared with Lee that included pistol shooting with Hanford patrol, camping, fishing, hunting and cruising around the world. She spent much of her time outdoors, tending her garden and watching birds. Vera managed Hazel’s candies and worked retail for Dodson’s Jewely and was an avid collector of many things. In her later years, Vera enjoyed day trips and coffee outings with her daughter, continuing to build memories even in her solo life.

  • Missed seeing Vers at Barracudas Coffee shop. She would visit there till Covid. Then went thru the drive through. But when she’d sit a spell and share stories, especially about Lee. He was my contact too with he and Vera, as he trained folks for Hanford Patrol. She was proud of him to say the least. She will be missed.
